Where They Work

Tap any institution to see what its researchers work on.

UTSA
The University of Texas at San Antonio
+

UTSA is a Carnegie R1 "very high research activity" university and one of Texas's fastest-growing research institutions. Its scientists span molecular biology, neuroscience, chromatin and cancer genetics, developmental and regenerative biology, and reproductive science, alongside strong programs in astrophysics, AI, cybersecurity, and behavioral health. Several of our guests run labs here studying everything from gene regulation and lymphoma to exoplanets and autism therapies.

UT Health
UT Health San Antonio
+

UT Health San Antonio is the region's premier academic health center, running over 200 studies a year with an emphasis on translational "bench to bedside" research. Its strengths include cancer (through the NCI-designated Mays Cancer Center and Greehey Children's Cancer Research Institute), longevity and aging at the Barshop Institute, neuroscience, regenerative medicine, diabetes and metabolic disease, infectious disease, and military health. It's also home to the MD/PhD program and mentoring initiatives featured on our show.

SwRI
Southwest Research Institute
+

SwRI is one of the largest independent, nonprofit R&D organizations in the country — around 3,200 staff working across roughly 4,000 active projects "from deep sea to deep space." It's a world leader in space science and spacecraft instrumentation, serving as the principal investigator institution for major NASA missions including Juno, New Horizons, Lucy, and Europa Clipper, while also advancing robotics, AI, fuels and engines, chemistry, and bioengineering.

OLLU
Our Lady of the Lake University
+

OLLU is a small, private Hispanic-Serving Institution in San Antonio built around close, one-to-one mentorship — biology classes are capped so faculty can work individually with students, who have lab access on evenings and weekends for their own research. Its science programs emphasize hands-on undergraduate research and serve as pathways into graduate school, medical school, and the health professions, with faculty who bring active research backgrounds into the classroom.

Why We Do This

World-class research is happening right here in San Antonio and most students have no idea. We sit down with the scientists behind it and turn their work into conversations anyone can follow.

TheResearchRoomSA bridges the gap between cutting-edge biomedical research and the community it serves. We give San Antonio's researchers a platform to share their stories, and we show the next generation of students that the path into science starts closer than they think, in their own city.
